IGNATIUS-OF-LACONI: Scullion for the Capuchins in Sicily. Illiterate and not too healthy, he worked for twenty years as a cook and weaver.
In 1741 he was shunted into the streets to beg for alms, presumably on the assumption he would inspire pity.
It certainly worked as his gentle demeanour and friendly style not only allowed him to get away with knocking on doors, it got to the stage where there were complaints if he didn't call often enough.
