St AGATHA

Christian Saint

Patron Saint of Bell Foundries, also Fire, Volcanoes and Explosions

Martyr from Sicily. After refusing the sexual favors of an important judge named Quintian, she was thrown into prisons and brothels but still refused to submit.

She underwent terrible tortures and mutilations, finally having her breasts cut off. In some early artistic attempts with very poor draftsmanship she is shown carrying them on a tray. Someone thought they resembled bells, and she was immediately adopted as the Patron Saint of Bell Founders.

However, further critics said rubbish, it’s obvious they are loaves of bread. So she also has a blessing of bread on her feast day.
