St ALPHEGE

Christian Saint

Archbishop of Canterbury and Martyr.

After a stint as a hermit he became an Abbot at Bath Abbey, and did King Aethelred the Unready a favor or two by converting the invading Danish king Anlaf.

Held to ransom by the Danes, he refused to allow his parishioners to raise the cash claiming they were too poor. The frustrated Danes drank themselves into a frenzy and slew him.
