St ARSENIUS-THE-GREAT

Christian Saint

Former imperial tutor in Egypt to the princes Honorius and Arcadius.

These behaved so badly and seemed so hell-bent on destroying their own Empire that our Saint fled to the desert — weeping so much he wore off his eyelashes.

After undergoing much ridicule, he managed to be accepted as a lowly monk, and always kept very quiet. His excuse: he always regretted the words he spoke, but was never sorry when he kept silent.
