After a pretty good career he stood up against Emperor Valens with the words 'You may threaten and torment us but you will never overcome us.'
Valens thought about this and backed off.
Basil is highly regarded and revered across almost the entire Christian spectrum. Accordingly he has a large number of feast days among different denominations — from January 1st to June 14th. Take your pick.
