St BENEDICT-THE-BLACK
Also known as BENEDICT-THE-MOOR

Slave who shepherded a community

A son of black Christian slaves in Sicily, he was granted his freedom and became a shepherd and started a hermit community. The hermits were prevailed upon to join an order and became Franciscans.

Despite illiteracy and having the wrong color skin, his natural tact and wisdom enabled him to work wonders.
