St BERNARDAlso known as BERNARD-OF-MONTJOUX, BERNARD-OF-MENTHON
Patron Saint of Skiers
He did missionary work in the Alps, having heard that the Lord alps those that alp themselves. (Sorry.)He also found himself founding hospices at the two famous passes named after him — after discovering that people half-way up a snow-clad mountain tended to have more accidents than anyone else.
He is of course best known for those great lollopy rescue dogs: the breed known as the St Bernard. Was it his idea to equip them with barrels of brandy?
