St. CAESARIUS OF ARLES
Christian Saint
Rather too productive medieval cleric
He was a vigorous and productive Abbot and Archbishop in Gaul.
Always keen to introduce improvements into the church, he created the Regula virginum – the first official document to specify all the joys and comforts of life that women in monasteries were to be deprived of.
Another thing he seems to have introduced is the idea of special holy hours. He invented three of them: Terce, Sext and None. These seem to have faded from popular usage — particularly the None.
Caesarius is also remembered as the first person to be given a Papal Pallium. Which is a dangly pendant-like object of no apparent use but highly esteemed in holy circles.
