St CALLISTUS-I

Christian Saint

Also known as CALLIXTUS-I

Patron Saint of Undertakers, Gravediggers and Cemetery Workers

Roman Slave turned Pope.

Said to have been a slave who embezzled or lost his master’s money, he was sentenced to the treadmill and then to work in the mines of Sardinia.

On release he entered the priesthood in Rome. In consequence of his experiences he was always very lenient with sinners and gave them a second chance. In time he reached the very pinnacle of Christianity and was made Pope.

He’s credited with opening the first Roman cemetery to cater to the needs of Christians. Which by this time was sorely needed, if the amount of martyrdoms is any indication.

Although he himself is listed as a martyr, there are no records. At least he had a nice cemetery to be buried in.
