St COSMAS

Christian Saint

Patron Saint of Doctors, Physicians, Surgeons, Pharmacists, and Druggists. Also Barbers and Hairdressers

St COSMAS and St DAMIAN were twins from Syria. You can’t have one without the other.

They started as a free health service. They once conducted an amputation on a sleeping man who had a gangrenous leg. They replaced it with one from a recently deceased Moor. The man awoke to find he had two good legs again even if one was black and the other white.

Refusing to worship heathen Gods, they were bound in chains and thrown in the sea. An angel pulled them out and the presiding judge was struck down by demons.

Nevertheless persecution continued and the twins were thrown into a fire but the flames leapt outwards at the persecutors leaving our heroes unharmed.

Stoning didn’t work either; the stones boomeranged, as did arrows. Only one thing left. Beheading. How is it that this always seems to work?

They are the Patrons of physicians and barbers.
