St ERASMUS

Christian Saint

Also known as ELMO

Syrian Bishop and Martyr. Not a death for the fainthearted — his intestines were wound round a windlass.

He is responsible for St Elmo’s fire — the strange luminous phenomenon observed round the masts of ships.

Elmo is just a nickname conjured up for our Saint by sailors because he is their Patron, and they couldn’t come to terms with Eraswhatsit.
