St GERMAINE-COUSIN

Shepherdess with a very nasty family

They put ashes in her food, tar in her clothes, jeered at her deformed right hand and made her sleep in the barn. Under this treatment she soon acquired scrofula.

She made a rosary of knotted string and went to mass every day leaving the sheep in God's care. She shared her scraps of food with beggars. Others recognized her holiness and she gained respect locally.

Her family, fearful of retribution, invited her back into the house but she declined and was found dead in the barn aged 22.
