The rich disliked his banning flashy clothes in church. The clergy were more than annoyed when he imposed strict celibacy and an abbess who was punished for beating a nun would have welcomed the chance to thrash him.
Still, the lepers that he fed from his own table thought he was a jolly good fellow.
