St INNOCENT-III

Christian Saint

"I'm Innocent, I tell you!" But after learning the lessons of power and influence, INNOCENT-III was far removed from innocence.

What subterfuges did he use to get on the Saintwagon? Using his Popely powers he used King John of England as a vassal, deposed emperors and substituted his own stooges with a fine display of political powerplay.

Most cunning of all, he declared that the Church, being spiritual in nature, was above the State, which dealt with mere earthly matters.

Therefore all kings must bow the knee to the Church, and as the Pope was the Head of the Church, he was effectively the Supreme Ruler of All Christendom. Oh yes, apart from God.

INNOCENT-III is also known for initiating a very nasty Crusade which ended in disaster for all concerned. But we must stress he did have his good points. Probably.

For some reason, we have — despite much research — failed to find his feast day. Maybe he doesn’t have one. To avoid this discrepancy, we have taken the liberty of donating 31 February. We feel he deserves it.
