St JACOPONE-OF-TODI

Christian Saint

Franciscan lay brother. A lawyer in Umbria, he was grief-stricken when his wife died after only a year of marriage.

He went off the rails and did idiot penances running around in a bridle with an empty saddle, but settled down when he joined the Franciscans where he produced popular mystical religious poetry.

An outspoken critic, he upset the current Pope and was imprisoned for five years. He just carried on with his poetry until the Pope died and he was released.
