St JOHN-OF-GOD

Patron Saint of Hospitals, Nurses, the Sick and Portuguese Booksellers

Ex-soldier and adventurer until the age of 40 when he changed direction and became a peddler of religious trinkets and books, progressing to a bona fide bookshop in Granada.

Impressed by a wandering preacher, he had a touch of religious mania and ran amok in the streets tearing his hair and clothes.

He was taken to the hospital and when he came round was so appalled by the conditions there he resolved to do everything he could to improve matters and help the patients.

Which he did, often carrying patients home on his back for extra care.

Visitors often email us asking about St John-of-god statues, sculptures or carved figurines of St John-of-god. We regret we cannot assist with identifying such items.
