St MAXIMILIAN-KOLBE

Franciscan Priest and Martyr during the Second World War.

He published a magazine in Poland called 'Knight of Mary Immaculate' which, when it reached a circulation of 70,000 copies, gave him the funds to build a small self-support town called Mary the Immaculate for a population of 760.

Although he had suffered tuberculosis and was down to one lung, he remained undaunted and his next enterprise was to open a radio station.

Sadly the Germans invaded and promptly closed it down, so he went in for sheltering refugees — especially Jews. This got him sent to Auschwitz.

Even there he gave his all, raising as much hope as possible. Finally he stood in for another prisoner who had been sentenced to death by starvation. Here he fought to the last and refused to die in the stipulated time. In the end they had to give him a lethal injection.

His sacrifice was not in vain as the man he saved actually survived and was able to let the world know.
