St PALAGIA-OF-TARUS

Christian Saint

This is one of these unsubstantiated anti-Diocletian tales.

As an anti-Christian Emperor of Rome, you always get the impression that Diocletian personally subjected every Martyr to interrogation and they more or less died by his hand alone.

How he ever found time to carry out his re-organization and re-building programs as well is a mystery. No wonder he took early retirement and took up growing cabbages.

Meanwhile, our Saint in this account was engaged to one of Diocletian’s sons (his name seems to have escaped). Upon telling the lad she had decided to become a Christian, he killed himself in shame.

True to his evil reputation, Diocletian tried to seduce her himself, and upon her refusal had her roasted inside a brazen bull. No doubt with much evil chuckling.
