Egyptian Hermit. The follower of St ANTHONY-THE-ABBOT, he became an Abbot in Nitria where he'd found a suitably mountainous patch of desert in which he could sit weaving baskets. Wherever did he find customers you may ask.
But Melania the Elder, mother of St MELANIA-THE-YOUNGER, made a point of doing the rounds of 'way out' hermits. She came visiting in style — with a donation of silver weighing three hundred pounds.
However, she was a bit miffed when he scarcely bothered to acknowledge her: "I'm busy, just leave it over there. I believe you — I don't have time to count it or weigh it."
"Look," she protested, "it's a gift. I don't even want one of your lousy baskets."
"So it's a gift. Just leave it and buzz off. I'm a hermit — I need peace and quiet. Hang on, there is one thing — do you happen to have any stale rye bread?"
