St PORPHYRIUS

Christian Saint

Reluctant Bishop.

He was instructed to make his way to Caesarea where he was held down by force and consecrated Bishop of Gaza.

He knew he wasn’t wanted there when Pagans barricaded the road, and he had to pray away a drought. This persuaded many that Christianity might have its uses and they let him through.

However, Pagan diehards were not happy and set fire to the Bishop’s house. But a girl managed to hide him from the mob, and as a special reward he converted her.
