St ROMANUS-OF-CONDAT

Christian Saint

Hermit turned Abbot.

He put a lot of thought into hermiting. He took tools, seeds and the recognized manual for hermitry: ‘Fathers of the Desert’.

He didn’t actually choose a desert though. After reflection, he plumped for a spectacular trio of Swiss precipices protected with fir trees.

Unfortunately the view was too spectacular. Disciples materialised in hordes and soon he didn’t have room to stretch. It needs a desert to keep visitors away — particularly if they have a discipling frame of mind.

Snowed under with eager followers, he soon had to send for his brother to help him build a monastery. Before he knew it, he was an Abbot.

His brother upset the first twelve monks and drove them all away. But now Romanus realized his true destiny and went to bring them all back.
