Emperor Justinian I was furious after Pope Sergius refused to approve the laws passed at the Quinisextile Council at Truillo. Zachary, the Emperor’s right hand man, was dispatched to arrest the Pope and drag him to Constantinople.
But Rome was loyal to the Pope. The ordinary citizens refused to let action be taken against him, and in a bizarre turn of events, Zachary himself was forced to beg the Pope for protection from the mob. He even hid under the Pope’s bed to escape the crowd.
And so St SERGIUS-I bounced back, while Justinian cursed and scaredy-cat Zachary was jeered out of the history books.
