St SIGFRID

Known as the Apostle of Sweden.

A priest from York, he set out as a missionary to Goathland where he built a wooden church bearing a cross. When one of his staff died the grave was also marked with a cross. This did the trick. The cross symbol brought droves of converts.

Off founding new churches, the original church at Wexlow was attacked by pagans and those left in charge murdered.

The converted King wished to execute the murderers, but St SIGFRID said no. So the King fined them heavily instead.

But the stubborn priest wouldn't take the money and built the church with great financial difficulty. This seemed to increase his popularity and when he died his tomb became very famous for miracles.
