St VITUS

Christian Saint

Martyr.

As a lad from Sicily he embraced Christianity but came up against Valerian, so he fled to Italy where he ran into the Diocletian regime. End of story.

But no, not so quick. How did he become Patron of Dancers and Comedians?

In 17th Century Germany it was considered a great thing to dance before his statue. Dancing to excess then became confused with the twitching disease know as chorea, which then became known as ‘St Vitus’s Dance’.

So if you suffered from this condition you could dance even more but pray for release at the same time.
