The Gods of Ancient Egypt...

HENET

Egyptian Unknown Goddess

Pelican Of The Dead

Just when you think there can be nothing left on the Fur and Feather God circuit, we present a god scoop: a Pelican Goddess.

Henet means ‘pelican’ in ancient Egyptian, but she is no ordinary bird. She is known as The Mother Of The King, and there are not many pelicans who can claim that.

We are told that Henet assists the dead with their journey through the Underworld. What a wonderful thought. All those poor deceased souls drifting miserably through the land of shadow are guided by a helpful pelican like some kind of cheery Disney character.

We promise we are not making this up. It’s all there in the Pyramid Texts.

Apart from that, Henet is a deity of unknown attributes. At least, we haven’t found them yet. What do pelican deities get up to? Apart from guzzling fish that is.
