CALCHAS

Greek legendary mortal

Somewhat over-hyped Greek soothsayer

A descendant of Apollo, he was the Greek army’s official prophet and prognosticator during the Trojan War.

His professional soothsayery was unmatched. Calchas knew how to hob-nob with the Gods and could foretell practically anything by the flight of birds if there were no Gods around. He knew who had the bow of Heracles and loved to claim credit for that Wooden Horse idea.

Preening himself for fame and glory on his return home, something unpredictable happened. He was stranded on the Ionian coast. Here he met Mopsus, another seer, who had predicted his coming and proved to be ten times smarter.

Calchas, whose professional dignity suffered a mortal blow, died of sorrow. As predicted.
