DESPOENA

Greek Fertility Spirit

Nymph daughter of Poseidon and Demeter

What racy secrets the Gods try and keep from us. When DEMETER tried to flee POSEIDON’s unwelcome advances by turning into a mare, she hadn’t reckoned on his having invented horse racing. There was no chance of escape and before long DEMETER was with horse and daughter.

DESPOENA was the result, but unlike her brother ARION, who took after both parents in horse mode, she came into the world as a beautiful nymph.

However she doesn’t easily fit into the usual squadron of NYMPHS as she became something of an Eleusinian mystery.
