Leftover Crocodile God

We’re tempted to call him Pete. But actually, this is the Greek form of Sebek, the Egyptian Croc God of fearsome aspect.

If that sounds bizarre to you, welcome to our world. Did Sebek visit Greece on vacation some time? It turns out no.

Actually, the legend of the famous fearsome Crocodile God survived into the Graeco-Roman era. The old Crocodilopolis became a snappy tourist attraction and Petesuchos – or whichever terrifyingly large crocodile happened to be nearby – was its star.
