She was a young virgin who was so full of esoteric knowledge that she drove a top visiting Brahmin wild with envy.
He plotted with his disciples all night to embarrass her. The next day he gave the poor girl a public test with a series of leading questions about pleasure and pain. Her innocent replies were twisted and distorted by the Brahmin to make her seem like a very naughty girl. The villagers were shocked and wanted to drive her away.
She was so horrified that she just wanted to die. So she got in touch with Shiva, made herself a funeral pyre and jumped on board. Shiva cleared the way for her to shoot up to Heaven on a pillar of flame. The villagers then realized how silly they’d been.
Muchilot Bhagavathi now hangs out with the Kali gang and is the patron goddess of the Vaniyas. We don’t know what happened to the Brahmin. Hopefully nothing good.
