Also known as Kongō Zaō Bosatsu, Zao Gongen

Protective Shugendo Mountain Buddha

One of the Gongen, he is a vitally important deity in the religion of Shugendo, a syncretic belief system somewhere between Japanese Buddhism and Shinto.

He resides on the peak of Mount Zao (or is it Mount Mitake?) where he stamps out evil with the same violence it brings. He is often seen wielding a thunderbolt.
