PRUDENTIA

Roman Disciplinary Goddess

Also known as Prudence

Goddess of Looking Before You Leap

She is the deity of Prudence and Self-Control. Prudentia is there to stop you doing anything crazy without thinking it through.

Her best friend and colleague is Goddess of Justice Justitia. In her hands she holds a mirror and a snake. We have no idea why. The snake in particular doesn’t sound prudent at all but rather risky.

Other sources suggest Prudentia has two or three faces — looking to the past, present and future. Shades of Janus there.

With an abundance of caution, we prudently admit we haven’t got a clue. Perhaps the snake knows.
