This is a special manifestation of the God Tezcatlipoca. He obviously doesn’t give a hoot that other owls have hardly a letter to their name.
The name Chalchiuhtecólotl means ‘Precious Horned Owl’ — although pretentious may be more fitting.
In Aztec culture, owls were often associated with magic and sorcery. So be careful if you see a mysterious owl following you about – it could be Tezcatlipoca about to cast a spell on you.
