St BLAISE

Christian Saint

Also known as BLASE

Patron Saint of Sore Throats and Throat Disease, also Wool-Combers

Bishop of Sebastea and Martyr.

Known for his Blessing of the Throats, having saved the life of a boy with a fishbone in his throat. On his feast days two candles are placed on the throats of the faithful.

When the persecution of Christians broke out in Armenia he fled to the hills and lived in a cave blessing and healing wild animals.

He was betrayed by hunters and beheaded after near-starvation. He’s also the Patron Saint of Wool-Combers, as wool was just the thing to wrap round sore throats.
