St JOHN-RUYSBROECK

Christian Saint

Mystic and writer. With his uncle and another priest they formed a tiny contemplative community away from the distractions of Brussels.

John’s great delight was to wander in the forest of Soignes where God talked to him, and he could take notes on wax tablets. Then he would edit them in his cell to come up with works like ‘Spiritual Espousals’.

Unlike most authors he would not speak about his working methods. There was none of this "...then God said to me as he sat in a beech tree cleaning his ears with a pigeon feather: ‘Would you like some fresh wax for your tablets?’"
