St LUTGARD

Christian Saint

Cistercian nun and mystic.

A self-indulgent teenager, she was really upset when her dad lost her dowry. With no prospect of marriage she was packed off to a convent as a Benedictine postulate.

She didn’t like this at all. The nuns knew better than to push it with a stroppy teen and left her alone. She tended to have visitors and play truant. At least there was no pop music.

One day while off to visit friends, she ran into JESUS (for someone who has not yet managed a Second Coming he does nip down to Earth rather a lot on informal visits).

"Hey," said JESUS, "If you give it try you could become a Mystic — wouldn’t that be great?" So she did, and she was.

Not for the Benedictines whom she was fed up with, but by joining the Cistercians at Aywieres, who spoke French whilst she only knew German.

This was great because she could be as mystic as she liked without any nuns being able to tell her what to do.
