PODARGE

Greek Demonness

Also known as PODARKE

Horse-breeding harpy

She is one of the rather terrifying human-faced bird monsters known as HARPIES. Homer claims she is the mother of BALIUS and XANTHUS, the two supernatural steeds of ACHILLES. Her name means ‘swift of foot’, which adds a certain credibility.

However, other sources say AELLO was responsible. Could Homer have been lying to us all this time?

Either way, Wind God ZEPHYRUS was definitely the father. PODARGE and the other HARPIES may once have been wind spirits, which might explain why she consorted with a Wind God. But this could all be a lot of hot air.
