ALEUT

Native American legendary mortal

Wife of the Moon.

She worshipped the Man in the Moon and he took her to be his Moon Wife. Imagine her disappointment when she found he did not live in the moon at all but a very ordinary hut somewhere in the sky.

Furthermore she was left very much alone as he was out all night and slept through the day. She wasn’t even allowed to look behind the curtain in the corner.

Eventually she allowed herself a glimpse — and found moon masks representing slivers, quarters and horns. Then a voice said ‘Now you know my secret.’

And now she has to go out all night and wear the appropriate moon phase mask all night long — while the Moon Man lives a life of leisure and only works once a month doing the mask of the Full Moon.

This is what happens when you wish for the Moon.
