St MARTIN-DE-PORRES

Christian Saint

Patron Saint of Barbers and Hairdressers, also Inn Keepers, Hotel Managers and Pub Landlords

Dominican brother and social activist.

Son of Spanish noble and a black woman in Peru he knew all about racial prejudice.

A skilled physician and healer, he cared for the poor and helped immigrants with accommodation and comfort — to the extent of planting fruit trees along roads to provide shade and food for travelers.

If this wasn’t enough he also took in sick animals and was a barber.
