St. MARTIN DE PORRES

Christian Saint

Patron Saint of Bars and Barbers

Dominican brother and social activist. The son of a Spanish noble and a black woman in Peru he knew all about racial prejudice.

A skilled physician and healer, he cared for the poor and helped immigrants with accommodation and comfort — to the extent of planting fruit trees along roads to provide shade and food for travelers.

If this wasn’t lovely enough he also took in sick animals and was a barber.

He is now Patron Saint of convivial hosts such as Inn Keepers, Bar Owners, Hotel Managers and Pub Landlords. Also Barbers and Hairdressers, but we are more focused on the hospitality side. May he bless the humble pub landlord for evermore amen.
