Pursued by a suitor who would not take No! for an answer she fled with two maids over the sea to Galloway.
To her horror she had no sooner got ashore when he came running up the beach behind her. She escaped his embraces and staggered to a rock in the sea dragging her two terrified attendants with her.
They needn’t have worried. It was miracle time and the rock floated away to Monreith Bay. Peace at last... but before she had time to think about building sandcastles the man was there again, pounding along the beach towards her.
She climbed a tree and shouted at him: “Why do you persecute me?”
Undeterred, he answered: “because I am enslaved by your beautiful eyes”. “Take them then!” she cried, gouging hem out and hurling them at his feet. That got rid of him. He couldn’t leave fast enough.
She dropped from the tree and shouted for the maids to bring water to wash away the blood. “There isn’t any,” they squealed, “only that sea stuff with seaweed an’ the dead crabs an’ all.”
Miracle time? You’ve got it. A freshwater spring gushed from the very spot where her eyes had fallen. And when she washed her face her eyes were back in. How about that?
Check it out. There by the Kirkmaiden chapel at Monreith Bay is the spring, and nearby is the very rock that carried her from Galloway.
