St. OPTATUS

Christian Saint

Sinner-loving Bishop of Milevum

Optatus was Bishop of the old Roman city of Milevum aka Melevis in Numidia.

An early church leader, he seems to have spent most of his time trying to stem the tide of Donatism and prevent a terrible schism.

Donatists believed that the church was meant for Holy folk only and that mortal sinners must be excluded at all costs.

Of course he succeeded in his mission, as the church is open to everyone and sinners are particular welcome.
