St. STEPHEN HARDING

Christian Saint

English Abbot of Citeaux

This was not the best of locations, being in a marshy wilderness. But perfect for his purposes.

As a Cisterian he did his utmost to make it as miserable, austere and unwelcoming as he could. In this, he succeeded tremendously.

But it was no use. Like-minded souls flocked to join and thirteen abbeys came into being. There’s nothing like spreading a little joy.
