Patron Saint of Winchester in England
English Bishop of Winchester and also a Rainmaker.
He was brilliant at miracles. One of the most notable was when a woman on her way to market with a basket of eggs collided with a monk. Crunch! Splat! What a mess. Not an egg unbroken.
Then Swithun appeared. Schlim! Vulloom! Eggs miraculously intact. What a pity he was not around when the Humpty Dumpty tragedy occurred.
What of the rain? Well, he once firmly stated that when he died he did not want to be buried inside, but outside where the rain could fall on his grave.
This was fine, until a hundred years later meddling church authorities in their wisdom decided to move his remains inside ‘as befits his status’.
In his Saintly mode Swithun was not at all pleased. On the day of his transfer he sent down a torrential downpour which lasted for forty days. He is of course Patron of Winchester.
