SPHINX (2)

Greek fabulous creature

A monster mash-up of lion, woman and harpy

The Greek Sphinx seems to run parallel with the Egyptian Sphinx, except the Greek one can produce a birth certificate.

She was the monstrous daughter of Typhon and Echidna along with her siblings Cerberus, Chimera, Hydra and the Nemean Lion.

This Miss Sphinx was woman from the waist up and lion from the waist down. She seems to have sported vulture wings, making her part-harpy, although this would need to be confirmed by DNA testing.

Miss Sphinx asked the same silly riddle to anyone who came along. And then invariably ate them. Oedipus looked into the matter and shouted “For God’s sake man! What do you think you’re up to?” He obviously mistook her sex, but this seemed to be the right answer.

She was so surprised she flew up into the air, forgot to take off into the wind, spun out of control and crashed onto a rock, breaking her neck.

The Egyptian version is really called Harmakhis, is much nicer and could even be male although it is hard to tell.
