KAMADHENU

Hindu Abundance Goddess

Also known as Surabhi

The Great Celestial Sacred Cow Goddess

She is the holy cow of plenty, the mother of all living things, worshiped and adored by trillions of Hindus and dairy-lovers worldwide.

She seems to have come to the surface during the great churning of the primordial sea of milk when Amrita, the holy ambrosia, formed. According to one story, Daksha drank so much of the creamy goodness that he got hiccups and burped her into existence.

Kamadhenu is depicted as a cow with a beautiful woman’s face. She not only has a full complement of nourishing teats but also — in some images — human breasts. She must be the ultimate mother figure.

As the supreme mother cow, she bestows goodness and abundance upon all who adore her. All cows are her sisters, so treat them with respect. Killing a cow is one of the three dreadful sins. Hamburgers are definitely off the menu.

Her daughter is the magic cow Nandini.
