The colorful deities and demons of India...

GAUTAMA (2)

Hindu God

Also known as Rishi-Gautama

Great Seer who saw mantras

One of the seven super Saptarishis, he was a sage whose writings appears in the Rig-Veda. His major accomplishment was inventing mantras, a feat surely worthy of the Vedic Nobel Prize.

He has several other claims to fame, including being cuckolded by Indra, who had an illicit dalliance with his wife Ahalya while he was in the bath. (As his bathtub was the River Ganges, this was probably less risky than it sounds.)

When Gautama (2) arrived home, they were still at it, so he cursed them both. Ahalya was turned to stone and Indra became covered in vaginas. Oh the embarrassment. How the other Gods laughed. Never underestimate a sage.
